Turkey follows situation around "Armenian genocide" law in France

09 July 2012 [16:06] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey is closely monitoring the situation around the re-consideration of the bill criminalising the denial of "Armenian genocide" in France, TRT Haber quoted Turkish President Abdullah Gul as saying on Monday.

"Turkey will not act based on rumors about it. At the last meeting with the president of France, we noted the need to strengthen bilateral relations," Gul said.

Earlier, a number of French media reported that a law criminalising denial of the "Armenian genocide", which led to the deterioration of French-Turkish relations, is again on the agenda.

Recent media reports that "a law criminalizing denial of the 1915 events will be reviewed" were confirmed by a statement of the Elysee Palace.

Turkish-French relations, which improved after the election of Francois Hollande as President, once again deteriorated after the statement of the Elysee Palace.

Armenia and the Armenian lobby claim that the predecessor of the Turkey - Ottoman Empire had committed the 1915 genocide against the Armenians living in Anatolia, and achieved recognition of the "Armenian Genocide" by the parliaments of several countries.
