NATO sets high bar for Georgia

It will take several years for Georgia to reach the high bar which has been set for it under the terms of joining NATO, deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for European Integration Giorgi Baramidze told media today.

"This high bar was set for Georgia for several reasons," he said.

Baramidze said that the NATO summit in Chicago does not plan to expand NATO, but Georgia will be represented as a candidate country, along with the three Balkan countries.

"They have the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP), but Georgia has a stronger argument, the NATO-Georgia Commission which could allow Georgia's joining the alliance without MAP, if we reach NATO standards," he said.

The Georgian delegation led by President Saakashvili will participate in the Chicago summit to be held on May 20-21. It is assumed that the delegation will participate in three meetings during the summit.
