Turkey notes need to intervene in Syria

Turkey's intervention in the situation in Syria is not Ankara's choice, but a direct obligation, Anadolu agency quotes Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, as saying.

"Turkey cannot silently watch over the situation in Syria. Our intervention in the Syrian crisis is inevitable," Davutoglu said.

He said that President Assad's regime made big mistakes and Iran, Russia and China, which continue to support Assad, recognise it. No external power is able to keep a regime the people reject in power.

Earlier, Syrian authorities accepted Kofi Annan's proposed plan to resolve the crisis in the country. The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a statement expressing 'full support' to Annan's proposals of March 21.

Anti-government protests which began in mid-March 2011 have persisted in Syria for almost a year. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilians and the security forces. According to UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 9000 people.

The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes saying they receive assistance from neighbouring countries.
