Turkey sets refugee camps for Syrians

14 March 2012 [16:19] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey has launched work to create a new camp for Syrian refugees seeking asylum in neighboring countries, TRT Haber TV channel reported on Wednesday.

Last week a group of Syrian senior military officials, opposing the actions of the country's authorities, have fled across the border into Turkey.

Some 236 civilians escaping unrest in the country have fled together with the military officials. Their number hit about 600 people over the past three weeks.

Anti-government protests which began in mid-March have persisted in Syria for almost a year. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilians and the security forces.

According to UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 7,500 people. The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes saying they receive assistance from neighboring countries.
