Iran ready for "Step by Step" talks

27 January 2012 [13:22] - TODAY.AZ

Iran is ready for negotiations on the "Step by Step" plan with P5+1, if it is in the interests of Iran on its peaceful nuclear program, Mehr news agency quotes Iranian parliamentary national security and foreign policy commission head, Allaeddin Boroujerdi, as saying.

Boroujedi said Iranian officials have already held negotiations on this issue with their Russian colleagues. He also added that Iran is going to follow the "Step by Step" plan only if it is Russia who will act as an initiator.

On July 13, 2011, Russia made a proposal for a "step-by-step" approach, according to which, Iran could address questions about its nuclear program and be rewarded with a gradual easing of sanctions.

The Iran Six, comprising Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany, have been trying since 2003 to convince Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program.

Boroujedi advised P5+1 to accept that Iran is a country with nuclear potential, and expressed hope for negotiations.

Iran and the P5+1 have held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010 and in the Turkish city of Istanbul last January.
