Turkey to import more gas

18 January 2012 [17:53] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey intends to increase natural gas imports into the country in perspective, thus reducing cost of "blue" fuel, the Star newspaper quotes Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz as telling journalists.

"It is planned to increase natural gas imports into the country increasingly attracting private sector for it," Yildiz said. He said Turkey also plans to reduce natural gas use at power plants at the expense of renewable energy sources and domestic coal.

In 2011, the Turkish State Pipeline Company Botas imported over 39.7 billion cubic meters of gas from various sources compared to about 32.5 billion cubic meters in 2010.

Turkey also imports gas from Azerbaijan, which is supplied via the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline. Last year about 39.4 billion cubic meters of gas will be sold on Turkey's domestic market compared to about 31.5 billion cubic meters in 2010.
