Center for Strategic Studies under President of Azerbaijan Republic releases report on work done in 6 months of 2011

The Center for Strategic Studies under President of Azerbaijan Republic released a report on the work done within the first six months of 2011.

The Center said that a number of research projects, important visits, meetings and events were realized during the reporting period.

The main scientific studies included the Turkish-language book “South Caucasus. Territorial integrity, geopolitical struggle and energy”, the first edition of the quarterly journal “Caucasus International” (in English) founded by Turkey-based Eurasian Scientists Society and published with the support of the Center for Strategic Studies, reports entitled “Influence of the amendments to the 2011 state budget on macroeconomic stability, economic development and social welfare”. This list also includes book “From Maindorf to Astana: principle aspects of Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict” published within the framework of the joint project of Middle East countries’ history department of the History Faculty of Moscow State University and the Center for Strategic Studies. This book is an interesting guide for analyzing the problems in the South Caucasus and searching the optimal models of post-conflict resolution.

Within six months the representatives of the Center for Strategic Studies prepared analytical materials, 91 articles were published in the press and e-media, 16 interviews were given. Article entitled “Interaction of the approaches of Turkey, Russia and US on Nagorno Karabakh conflict” prepared by deputy director of the Center for Strategic Studies Gulshan Pashayeva and editor of “Turkish Policy Quarterly” journal Nigar Goksel was published in the third edition of the journal “The comments of the Center for Strategic Studies”. Scientific worker of the Center for Strategic Studies Rashad Karimov was the advisor of “A Crucible of Nations: The Geopolitics of the Caucasus” prepared by Stratfor global intelligence company.

Memorandums on cooperation were signed with the leading think tanks of Turkey and Russia within the six months.

Center for Strategic Studies (SAM) organized a series of international and local events, as well as visits of the foreign guests to Azerbaijan in the first half of 2011, including international events like conferences entitled “Changing power balance in the Middle East” attended by STRATFOR chief executive and founder George Friedman and editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Policy F. Lukyanov, “Barack Obama administration and Azerbaijan-Armenia Nagorno Karabakh conflict” attended by delegations of Haifa and George Washington universities, as well as “Cyber- and national security. NATO policy and national view”.

The Center organized some interesting national events, including the conference entitled “Globalization, national idea and Azerbaijan” organized jointly with the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, as well as a series of public debates organized jointly with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan.

SAM invited the delegations of the US Global Affairs Council’s Leaders Mission and Truman National Security Project to Azerbaijan. They held meetings with the heads of governmental agencies and experts. SAM researchers were involved in the education process in some of the universities of Azerbaijan.
