Azerbaijani MP speaks about prospects for Karabakh conflict resolution and Armenia's "friends"

22 April 2010 [15:07] - TODAY.AZ
"The Karabakh conflict will not be resolved until world powers end struggle for the South Caucasus region,” member of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) Fazail Ibrahimli said.

In the Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan should oppose not Armenia, but those forces that protect Yerevan. Azerbaijan’s balanced policy enables to counteract these forces and to protect national interests, the MP said.

"We are increasing our military capabilities and want to resolve the conflict peacefully at the same time. Today, its is the best policy on the backdrop of current situation in the South Caucasus.”

“In a sharp clash of geopolitical interests, reckless political decisions could lead to very negative results. This is what happened in Georgia's case" the MP added.

Ibrahimli said, except during the period of the Soviet Union, Armenians have always been a tool in the geopolitical games of world powers. “And now all three co-chair country are "friends" of Armenia.”

"But the international community unequivocally recognizes Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan. Time is running in favour of Azerbaijan, which even amid the global financial crisis could achieve economic growth and continued to implement major energy projects and build new industrial facilities.”

“In the meantime, socio-economic situation is getting worse and worse in Armenia with each day. Armenia has hostile relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey and tense relations with Georgia. Negative attitude toward the Karabakh Armenians are growing inside Armenia,” the MP added.

“One can only feel sorry for the Armenian people who have always been victim of their hypocritical leaders. During the First World War, allied with Tsarist Russia, they raised the nation against Turkey, thus struck in the back of the Turkish state. Naturally, the Armenians were deported from Turkey.”

“A conflict with Azerbaijan added to the strained relations with Turkey. As a result of this policy, ordinary citizens of Armenia leave the republic in search of an income. That's the price the people have to pay for country’s being conductor of foreign states’ interests," the parliamentarian noted.

Commenting on U.S. administration's attitude to the so-called "Armenian genocide", Ibrahimli noted that President Barack Obama is forced show in some ways that he stays true to his election pledges.

“Of course, recognition of the "genocide" by the U.S. would be far more damaging to Turkey than its recognition by all countries of Europe. This may not only harm Turkey’s image, but also have legal consequences from the payment of monetary compensation to the territorial claims,” the MP said.

"But the real policy says that the U.S. will never risk losing such an important, strategic partner like Turkey. So, during his annual April 24 speech, Obama will find a way out of the situation, without creating problems in relations with Ankara,” MP Ibrahimli underscored.
