Azerbaijani MP: Russia no longer actively supports Armenia

11 February 2010 [18:47] - TODAY.AZ
"In the early 1990s such speeches by Armenian President would be taken seriously or could draw attention,” Azerbaijani member of parliament Aydin Mirzaze said.

He was commenting on Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech at Chatham House in London.

"But it is 2010 now and Europe, in particular, English society are quite impartially informed about the situation in the South Caucasus and the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Mirzazade said.

"Armenia wants to introduce itself as a supporter of peace in the region and country, which does everything to establish good neighborliness. I think everyone knows that aggressor country hides under the guise of peace-loving Armenia,” the MP said.

"The Armenian armed forces have captured 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory. Azerbaijani people faced ethnic cleansing in the occupied territories. Azerbaijanis were expelled from their lands.”

“Even during the World War II, the fascist invaders did not expell residents from their territories. Armenia is also involved in a carnage in Khojaly. This tragedy is compared with mass killings in the Czech town of Lidice, Khatyn in Belarus and and My Lai in South Vietnam," he added.

"Also, everyone knows that the conflicts in South Caucasus stemmed from Armenia's territorial claims to all the neighboring countries. The exception is Iran, but I think one day  Armenia will make territorial claims to it as well saying that it is home to several thousands of Armenians," Mirzazade said.

"It is not up to Serzh Sargsyan to assess Azerbaijan’s activity. Azerbaijan is taking steps to liberate its occupied territories in accordance with the UN charter. In this respect, we are entitled to use any options – both peace talks and the liberation of occupied Azerbaijani lands by force," the MP added.

"With regard to weapons, today Azerbaijan’s military budget does not exceed 11 percent of the state budget. In world practice, the budget is considered a militarized when military spending exceeds 15 percent. Military budget makes more than 20 percent of the state budget in Armenia at present,” he said.

Commenting on Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s statement in London, concerning the normalization of Ankara-Yerevan relations, Mirzazade noted that Turkey has reiterated that it will not open the border without the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"It is wrong to demand Turkey opening the border, having a claim on its territory, accusing it of so-called "Armenian genocide" by delaying solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.”

"I also want to note that Sargsyan's visit to London and Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan’s simultaneous visit to Paris shows vanity of the Armenian leadership. Russia is no longer actively supports Armenia and its foreign policy. But search for support in London and other European capitals will not bring any success," he added.

"The world and individual countries provide a fair assessment of specific actions of states. These specific actions do not exist in the current policy of Armenia,” the MP noted.
