U.S. not to improve relations with Russia at cost of Azerbaijan, Georgia

17 November 2009 [14:31] - TODAY.AZ
"Azerbaijan can benefit from pursuing strong relations with both Russia and the U.S.," Mark Loucas, analyst at the Fund for Peace in Washington DC, said.
Speaking about the recent meeting between US and Russian presidents, analyst mentioned that the U.S. administration wants to improve relations with Russia on issues of mutual concern, but not at the cost of such countries as Azerbaijan, Georgia.

“Washington and Moscow are looking forward to lesson tensions in the region with respect to countries in the former Soviet Union," the analyst said.

Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh negotiation, Loucas said international mediation can be useful in demilitarizing the frontier and creating an opportunity for political negotiations.

“Frozen conflicts currently represent a major challenge for the international mediation. Unfortunately, this kind of conflicts includes actors without the political will to seek a peaceful solution," he added.

According to analyst, “people to people diplomacy” is often a good track to pursue.
