Azerbaijani opposition faces difficult situation: leader of opposition movement

19 October 2009 [13:18] - TODAY.AZ
Leader of the Azerbaijani opposition movement admits that the opposition faces a very difficult situation.
"It is necessary to maintain the unity in a situation when our resources are extremely limited," Leader of the National Unity Movement (NUM) Lala Shovkat said.

Musavat Party, represented in the Movement for Karabakh and Republic, has put condition before the Umid Party that the latter must withdraw its representatives from the election commissions. Umid Party stated that it will fulfill this requirement if members of Musavat group of MPs give up their mandates. The difference between the two parties caused serious crisis within the movement.

Shovkat said it is not right time for the parties represented in the Civil Movement for Karabakh and the Republic to set conditions to each other.

"When establishing the movement, we took as a basis the fact that the situation developed around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not in Azerbaijan's favor. Karabakh is our national problem and in the current period, I'm against the collapse of the movement connected with Karabakh," Shovkat added.

The position of the government and opposition on the Karabakh problem should be the same, she added.

"In such situation the movement should collapse. I strongly appealed Musavat party and Umid party to refrain from conditions and to compromise each other," Shovkat said.

Shovkat expressed regret that unions established by the Azerbaijani opposition are short-term in nature.

"I do not want to bring an accusation against any particular party, which played a role in the decay of these unions. But we cannot allow the movement connected with Karabakh to  collapse in the current period. I once more appeal Musavat and Umid to come to a compromise. Otherwise, the activity of the movement will be suspended. There is no need to keep the movement if the two parties, which are the founders of the movement, cannot find a common language," Shovkat added.
