Armenians in U.S. ask Turkish diaspora for help

14 October 2009 [11:51] - TODAY.AZ
The Turkish diaspora in the U.S. refused to interfere in solution of interior problems of the Armenian Diaspora, the head of Turk-American Assembly Gunay Evinch said.
He said those Armenians who support the signing of the protocols asked Turkish diapsora in the U.S. for help against those Armenians in America who protest against the protocols.

But the Turkish Diaspora didn't accept the request of Armenians, as they do not want to get involved with the problems inside the Armenian diaspora in the U.S.

Turkish and Armenian Foreign Ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich on Oct. 10.

Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed since 1993 due to Armenia's claims to recognize so-called "Armenian genocide" and Armenia's occupation of Azerbaijani lands.

Last week, during Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's visit to the United States, Europe, Argentina and Lebanon, representatives of the Armenian communities abroad, opposing the agreement with Turkey, met the president with protests and rallies.

The protestors chanted the slogans "Traitor!", "No protocols".

Sargsyan's policy is also protested by several opposition parties in Armenia which rallied against the signing of the protocols.

Evinch said the Turkish diaspora unlike that of Armenian doesn't get under the influence of political processes.

He said that the protocols signed didn't anyhow affect the unity of Turkish and Azerbaijani diasporas.

Evinch said during the recent years the image of Turkish and Azerbaijani diasporas in the U.S. has improved to a great degree

Taking advantage of this, Turkish diaspora in the states of California and Ohio could prevent the Armenian false initiatives concerning the events of the of Ottoman Empire, he added.

The head of diaspora also added that he was informed that number of US congress members supporting the bill about the "Armenian genocide" had reduced.
