We hope Turkish Parliament will urge Armenia to liberate occupied lands of Azerbaijan: Azerbaijani MP

13 October 2009 [15:14] - TODAY.AZ
Member of Azerbaijani parliament Ganira Pashayeva said she hopes that the Turkish Parliament will not ratify Ankara-Yerevan protocols if Armenia does not liberate Azerbaijan's occupied territories.
MP Pashayeva participated in TV debates at Ana Khabar program at SHOW TV Turkish channel, at the famous Can Dundarla Canli Qazete program at Turkish NTV TV channel and Haber Turk TV channel concerning signing the protocols to normalize Turkey-Armenia relations and submission of these documents for discussion of the Turkish Parliament on Oct. 21.

About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory was occupied by Armenia for more than 15 years, 1 million of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced people can not return to their lands and homes for many years, MP said.

She said that there are about 2.5 million refugees in entire CE area and Azerbaijanis account for 1 million of them.

Turkey closed the border with Armenia after Kalbajar region of Azerbaijan was occupied, Pashayeva said.

"Azerbaijani people believe that this policy must be continued in future. Turkey must not establish ties and open the border with Armenia till Armenia liberates Azerbaijan's occupied territories," MP said.

Pashayeva reminded about Turkish officials' statements that the border between Turkey and Armenia will not be opened and ties between two countries will not be established till Armenia frees Azerbaijan's occupied territories.

"We hope that the Turkish parliament will urge Armenia to liberate occupied lands of Azerbaijan and state that otherwise Yerevan should forget about ratification of protocols," MP said.

Pashayeva said that fruitless meetings held between Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents for many years was linked with Yerevan's refusal to liberate occupied territories.

"Unfortunately, co-chairs of OSCE Minsk Group do not demonstrate necessary activity to oblige Armenia to free occupied lands of Azerbaijan. They also do not put pressure on Yerevan," she said.

"Some forces abroad willing to reconcile Turkey and Armenia say that establishment of diplomatic relations between them and opening of the border will have a positive impact on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. But it is wrong view," Pashayeva said.

"If diplomatic relations are established and the border between these countries is opened before Azerbaijani lands are freed, Armenian president will hold tougher position in terms of liberating Azerbaijani territories," she said.

MP reminded Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's statements that "the situation we faced during the talks gives enough grounds to speak about it."

Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan were severed due to occupation of Azerbaijan lands by Armenia, she said.

Armenian-Turkish diplomatic ties have been severed due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of Azerbaijani lands. Armenian economic-social state fell into decay because of bad relations with neighbors, she said.

"Armenia should take decisive actions to change the situation. We hope that during discussions on protocols in the Turkish parliament, MPs will unambiguously made it clear to Armenia and the world that ratification of these documents is possible only after Azerbaijan's occupied territories are liberated," Pashayeva said.

Pashayeva said that the three countries, including the U.S., Russia and France who participated in the signing ceremony of Turkey-Armenia protocols do their best to achieve rapprochement of these countries.

"First, they must put pressure upon Yerevan so that Armenia will free Azerbaijan's territories. Peace and cooperation in the region are possible after Armenia leaves Azerbaijani occupied territories," MP said.

MP pointing to over-scrupulousness of this topic for Azerbaijan said that opening of Turkey-Armenia border before the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is solved will contradict Azerbaijani national interests.

Pashayeva was asked what she can tell concerning Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's visiting a football match in Turkey.

"We would like everybody to know that above-mentioned person participated in occupation of Azerbaijani lands and was one of its organizers," Pashayeva said.

"He is guilty of murder of thousands innocent Azerbaijanis killed during occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenian armed forces, as well as those who were subject to genocide of civilians in Khojali."

"Murder of thousands innocent Azerbaijanis will be on his conscience for ever. My relatives, schoolmates and friends were among these people," she said.

About 1 million of Azerbaijanis can not return their lands and homes due to aggressive policy of Armenia headed by him.

"What do you feel if you are not able to visit graves of your relatives, children, parents and return home for 15 years?"

"I think that I have mentioned enough facts for you to think over personality of Sargsyan and his country thoroughly and feel pain and feelings of Azerbaijani people."
