Azerbaijan can not remain silent and be indifferent to ongoing processes: Azerbaijani MP

12 October 2009 [16:24] - TODAY.AZ
“The steps that Turkey is taking is this country’s sovereign right,” Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijani parliament’s Security and Defense Committee Aydin Mirzazade said commenting on the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols aimed at normalizing relations.
"Turkey is an independent country and its actions, their consequences, pros and cons belongs to the Turkish leadership and country’s people. Azerbaijan has always respected all the steps taken by Turkey,” he said.

"But, of course, there are issues which relate directly to the national security of Azerbaijan. In these matters, Azerbaijan can not remain silent and be indifferent to the ongoing processes,” he added.

"Turkey signed the document on opening the borders not with any ordinary state, but the state, which has occupied part of Azerbaijani territory. Turkey-Armenia border was closed in 1993 precisely after Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani lands,” Mirzazade said.

"Over these years, Turkey has changed three presidents, five prime ministers and they all declared their commitment to the strategic alliance with Azerbaijan, and said that the border with Armenia will not be opened until occupied Azerbaijani lands are liberated,” he said.

"Current Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said the same. Even after the signing of the protocols Erdogan said he would not retreat from his promises. Now the parliament has the final say. It is difficult to say what parliament will decide. But I am confident that Turkey will not take steps that could pose problems for Azerbaijan,” he said.

“Opening the border with Turkey, Armenia will feel unpunished. There will be some impact on its economy. It can further delay the process of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and toughen its position in the negotiation process. All this is clear and nothing else will happen,” Mirzazde said.

"If Turkey opens borders with Armenia, there will be no difference between Turkey and Iran, because in spite of the occupied lands of Azerbaijan, Iran has good relations with Armenia and provides it with necessary resources and needs. We would not want Turkey to act in a similar way. At the same time, I think that Azerbaijan will always see friendship, cooperation, support and understanding from Turkey,” he said.

"Regarding President Serzh Sargsyan’s visit to Moscow, I think that Russia and Armenia are strategic allies and, perhaps, opening borders and negotiations on the settlement of the Karabakh issue and a wide range of bilateral relations will be discussed in Moscow,” MP said.

"But anyway, today Russia is playing a very important role in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. President of Russia participated in the negotiation processs several times and has provided assistance. I think this is a positive factor,” Mirzazade said.
