Azerbaijan’s opposition parties are at their last gasp: political expert

06 October 2009 [10:35] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan’s opposition parties are at their last gasp, Chief of the Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan and political expert Araz Alizade said commenting on the upcoming participation of Azerbaijani opposition parties in municipal elections to be held in Dec. this year.
"Today opposition parties are at their last. The period of romanticism has passed irrevocably in Azerbaijani politics. The new force will not appear. New forces, if they are talented, will think about how to earn money to go abroad and make a career,” he said.

"As to inter-opposition squabbles, I do not participate in them, so I can not say anything about it. I never speak about the taste of dinner which I have not eaten,” the political expert said.

"I think the opposition will not boycott the elections. Also, I believe that the opposition will never unite. In order to unite, it is necessary to come apart as a first step. But our opposition is not so well disengaged,” he added.

“Disengagement usually occurs on an ideological basis in order to overestimate the situation. Our politicians disintegrated through personal ambitions. Since they have not satisfied their ambitions so far, I believe that this disengagement will continue,” Alizade said.
