“Issues of disputed territories and fields between the Caspian countries will persist until status of the Caspian Sea is determined,” Member of the Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Working Group Vahid Ahmadov said commenting on the statement by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov who said it is much more important to solve legal problems of the Caspian Sea as a whole than to argue about ownership of separate geographical areas.
“First, the Turkmen president said that he would file with international court of arbitration against Azerbaijan, but now he says that it is necessary to continue dialogue with Azerbaijan on the Caspian oil fields, so I think that as a politician he is just maneuvering,” the MP said.
“A few days ago it was reported that Turkmenistan is ready to join Nabucco gas pipeline project. On the one hand, it is good that Turkmenistan has willingness to join Nabucco and is ready to cooperate with Azerbaijan in this field as this project is of great importance for Azerbaijan. On the other hand, with regard to differences on the Caspian Sea fields, here Turkmenistan speaks quite differently. This issue remains unresolved,” Ahmadov said.
"But I think that everything will be solved since presidents of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have friendly and normal relationship. Therefore, the Turkmen president also stated that controversial issues should be resolved through negotiations. I see no threat from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan,” he added.
"With regard to the Turkmen president’s statement that there are several “good options” for a compromise solution of the problems related to the disputed fields between our countries, I want to note that Azerbaijan has already compromised,” the MP said.
