Status of ex-president may not be granted to all former leaders of Azerbaijan: chief of parliament's staff

28 September 2009 [17:14] - TODAY.AZ
Chief of the Azerbaijani parliament staff does not exclude discussions over the bill on the status of ex-president during the autumn session.
"Work on this bill is underway. If the project is completed by the end of the year, it will be brought up for discussions in parliament during the autumn session. Even if the bill is adopted, this status may be applied to not all of the three former presidents of Azerbaijan. Now a criminal case has been filed with regards to one of them and he is wanted. Unless this issue is resolved, the status for them is impossible," Mirzayev told reporters on Sept. 28.

The additions and amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan through a referendum held on March 18 also envisage granting the status of ex-president. To this end, it is necessary to develop and adopt a new bill in the parliament.

Some time ago, head of the opposition Great Establishment Party and MP Fazil Mustafa developed and submitted a bill on status of ex-presidents.

Mirzayev said if the charges against former president Ayaz Mutallibov are not removed, according to the Azerbaijani legislation, the status of ex-president for him will be impossible.
