Chief of staff of Azerbaijani parliament comments on opposition parties' proposals about Electoral Code

The Azerbaijani parliamentary committee will discuss amendments and additions to the Electoral Code which was proposed by the union of several Azerbaijani opposition parties.
"Under the internal regulations of the parliament, the bill was submitted for discussion in the Committee on Law Policy and State Building. However, I believe there is no need to make amendments and additions to the current Electoral Code," Chief of Staff of Azerbaijani parliament Sefa Mirzayev said.

The parties united in the Movement for Karabakh and Republic submitted proposals on about 200 amendments and additions to the Electoral Code on the eve of municipal elections to the parliament's administration.

Azerbaijan will hold municipal elections in Dec. 2009.

Previous municipal elections were held in 1999 and 2004.

Recently number of municipalities decreased from 2,757 to 1,766.

Mirzayev said there is no need to for any amendments to the legislation for participation of the opposition in the municipal elections as a bloc.

"Azerbaijan's Electoral Code enables to hold free, democratic and transparent elections," Mirzayev added.

The Movement for Karabakh and Republic was launched prior to the March 18 referendum. It includes Popular Front of Azerbaijan, the Citizen and Development Party, the Liberal Party, the Democratic Party and the Musavat and Umid parties, as well as a number of public organizations.
