“Currently there are no publicly available information about at what stage is the issue of joint use of Gabala radar station between U.S. and Russia,” Azerbaijani parliament’s Security and Defense Committee Deputy Chair Aydin Mirzazade said commenting on recent media reports claiming that the U.S. will deploy new missile shield near Caucasus.

“Even if this facility is not located in Azerbaijan, I believe that Azerbaijan will benefit from it,” Mirzazade said.
“Although the Gabala radar has long been discussed, I feel there is obvious interest in this matter both by the United States and Russia. I think that this would benefit all sides,” the MP said.
"First the U.S will be able to secure itself and its European allies from possible missile attacks. Secondly, Russia will benefit as another bridge of trust will be built between Russia and the U.S. and there will be a mutual work in common cause. Thirdly, a world is tired of an opposition between the West and Russia,” he explained.
"Since Azerbaijan is a part of this world, Azerbaijan may also benefit from this. Naturally, Azerbaijan will also benefit from the location of facility,” Mirzazade added.
"This will help to promote Azerbaijan’s role in the region and to upgrade the Gabala radar station through funds of both Russia and the United States. On the other hand, Azerbaijan once again confirms its status as a country that seeks agreement between the opposing parties. Of course, the Gabala radar is the best option for this common cause, but the future show whether it will happen,” the MP said.
"Deploying of missile defense in European countries has brought high tension to relations between the West and Russia. I think this is the right decision to refuse deploying missile defense system in Europe. But it does not mean that the United States generally rejects such a system. Apparently, they have other plans that we will learn later. But I would like to see any solution that will lead to a reduced tension in the world,” he said.
