Iranian ex-president urges to hold referendum

20 July 2009 [15:17] - TODAY.AZ
It is necessary to hold a referendum to eliminate the crisis that occurred after the June 12 presidential elections, Iranian ex-president and chair of Combatant Clergy Association Mohammad Khatemi said in the 5th statement of the association, an official website of the association said.
Confidence of millions of people in fair presidential elections has exhausted. At present, the association believes that the referendum in line with the Constitution is an only way out of this situation. It is necessary to hold referendum by neutral agencies, which the people trust, the statement said.

Khatemi said referendum is an only opportunity for the authorities to regain the national confidence lost after the June 12 elections.

Meanwhile, another ex-president and current president Mahmoud Ahmadenejad's political rival Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said earlier last week that many doubt in honesty of results of last presidential elections and authorities should deal with it.
