Change in OSCE Minsk Group chairmanship format not stands on agenda: Azerbaijani foreign ministry

10 June 2009 [09:45] - TODAY.AZ
Change in format of the OSCE Minsk Group chairmanship format does not stand on agenda, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov said.
"Co-chairs must act in consensus. If principles are violated, Azerbaijan will express its attitude," he said.

Azimov said Azerbaijan is ready to continue to work with the current composition of the Minsk Group.

Azerbaijani media reported recently that Turkey can be included into the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
