Nagorno Karabakh Azerbaijanis to hold their first session

02 June 2009 [17:50] - TODAY.AZ
“The leadership of Public Union “Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh” will be elected, not appointed as before.

That’s why it is impossible to say who will lead the community,” one of the co-founders of the community, MP Elman Mammadov told APA. He said that the congress will be held on June 5. It will be the first congress of Nagorno Karabakh Azerbaijanis. The parliamentarian said the representatives of the congress will be chosen among the residents of the region.
“Organizing Committee of the Congress was set up, the committee held meetings and the representatives were chosen at the meetings,” he said.
Mammadov said the report on the work done will be discussed at the congress, future tasks determined, program adopted and the leadership of the union will be elected.
“It is not known who will lead the community. There are no candidates yet, they will be determined at the congress,” he said.

Mammadov also took a stance on the activity of the community.
“The community’s activity was not satisfactory. In connection with the present political historical situation, occupation, it should be admitted that the activity of the community was not satisfactory. These issues will be possibly discussed at the congress. Concrete program and decisions will be adopted at the congress to eliminate the weak points in our activity,” he said.

Chairman of Karabakh Liberation Organization Akif Nagi said neither he nor the organization had been invited to the congress.
“I do not understand why the congress has been scheduled without any preparations and why active political-social organizations of the region have not been invited to the congress. Therefore we think that such a congress is not held with good intentions. Unfortunately, the organizers of the congress have such a position and we hear about it only from media,” he said.
