On May 31, Kazakhstan marks the Commemoration Day of the Victims of Political Repression.
Today flowers were laid and a meeting was held at the Savior Mountain in Karaganda region (over 200 km from Astana). The event was also attended by the delegation of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Kazakhstan, as well as representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora.

"Nobody is forgotten and nothing is forgotten. These words are still actual," the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan Latif Gandilov said, making a speech after the ceremony of laying flowers.

According to the diplomat, during the years of repression over 150,000 Azerbaijanis were expelled from Kazakhstan and 28,000 of them were shot without trial and investigation.

"There is no future without the past. We must keep in mind our congeners, who were killed here without trial and investigation," said Gandilov.

He remembered that the decision on the establishment of this monument was made in the early days of opening the embassy in Kazakhstan.

Commemoration Day of the Victims of Political Repression in Kazakhstan has been marked every year on 31 May since 1997. In 1993, the Republic adopted a Law on Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression. According to official information, in general 3.77 million people became the victims of Stalinist repression in the USSR, of whom about 500,000 were shot, and other were sentenced to long, up to 25 years in prison. In addition, from 1921 to 1954, 103,000 people were repressed and over 25,000 were shot in Kazakhstan.
