Paper on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict provided in PACE

30 April 2009 [09:09] - TODAY.AZ
On April 29, a paper "Necessity to consider the Nagorno-Karabakh problem in the context of regional relations" was spread in PACE, which was submitted by the member of the Azerbaijani delegation Rafael Huseynov.
The document was signed by the parliamentarians from Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Estonia, etc.

The MP said that this paper contains decisive position of Azerbaijan and says that the states already involved or wishing to participate in major regional projects in Azerbaijan must necessarily take into account the Nagorno-Karabakh problem and the factor of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

The paper states that to achieve real results of attempts for decent international cooperation, must be taken into account the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The document strongly suggests possible prospects of regional cooperation with the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the norms and principles of international law, relevant decisions and resolutions of the UN Security Council, OSCE, Council of Europe and other international organizations.
