08 April 2009 [15:58] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani community in Dubai has sent an address to Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Receb Tayyib Erdogan.
The latest reports on normalizing the Turkish-Armenian relations arouse anxiety, the document said.

Representatives of different Turkish society circles think that borders with Armenian will open.

Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed since 1993 due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and the country's occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Yerevan on Sept. 6, 2008 upon the invitation of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisyan to watch an Armenia-Turkey football match.

Efforts have been made to normalize ties between the two countries ever since

Representatives of Turkish society believe that the borders with Armenia will be opened.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S.- are currently holding the peace negotiations.

"Perhaps, this step will lead to development of the region in future, but it will make forget about genocide and other tragedies committed by Armenia against the Turkic nation," the document said.

According to the society's leadership, Turkey must attentively treat with opening borders with Armenia and demonstrate that it is impossible while regarding Armenians' crime against Turkic nation, as well as a close friendship with Azerbaijan.

The statement of the Azerbaijani society in Dubai reports that not only Azerbaijan and Turkic nations, but also all world society will assess opening the Turkish-Armenian borders without Armenian militaries' withdrawing from the Azerbaijani occupied lands as treason toward the Azerbaijani people.
