17 March 2009 [15:21] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani authorities have made a lot of effort so the people of Azerbaijan understand the significance of the referendum on amending the country's Constitution and make a correct choice, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) British member Mike Hancock told Trend News on March 17.

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend 29 Articles of the Constitution.

The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

"I also think it is perfect for Azerbaijan and it's people to make the decisions themselves. The referendum which starts now is based on solid foundations and is legally correct," PACE referendum observation commission member Mike Hancock said.

"The preparations for the referendum are done correctly. We didn't find any violations," he said.

"It will be important that tomorrow goes well, and I think it will be well," Hancock said.

The Central Election Commission has registered the New Azerbaijan, City, Progress, Law and Democracy, Civil Society, For Sustainable Development, Intellect, Movement for Karabakh and Republic and Republicans initiative groups. The Prosperous Village, Free Speech, Azerbaijan People's Republic and National Independence initiative groups were denied registration.
