Azerbaijani opposition plans to hold protest action

27 February 2009 [11:58] - TODAY.AZ
Agitation groups of the movement "For Karabakh and Republic" and "Republicans" are planning to hold a number of mass actions on March 1, said head of the central office of the Musavat party Arif Hajili.
He said an appeal had been sent to the Baku executive powers due to the action.

"We have proposed several sites for the action including Fizuli, Samed Vurgun's park, a square near the Nariman Narimanov cinema, Huseyn Javid's square. We are also planning to hold meetings in close areas in particular the Tebriz cinema.

Moreover, there is a plan to hold mass actions in eight regions of the country. We have already sent appeals to the due bodies in connection with the action. But we haven't got the response yet", said Hajili.

Notably, both agitation groups are against introduction of amendments to the Azerbaijani constitution. The initiator of this civil movement "For Karabakh and Republic" was the Azadlyg bloc, consisting of three parties: the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Liberal Party of Azerbaijan, Civil Development Party and the public forum "For Azerbaijan". The initiative of the bloc also involved the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, Umid and Musavat parties as well as a number of NGOs.

The agitation group "Republicans" is created by the Musavat party. The referendum on amendments to the Constitution is planned to be held on March 18.
