The monuments and memorials of the Azerbaijani people were demolished and monuments of the Soviet ideology were erected in the Soviet times, said member of the Azerbaijani delegation Ganira Pashayeva speaking at discussions in the framework of the PACE winter session.
As an example she said that memorials of the 11th Red Army that overthrew the first Democratic Republic in the Muslim East, created in Azerbaijan, were erected in the most interesting places of Azerbaijan.
"After it the memorials were erected to the leaders of the Soviet ideology and totalitarian communist regime, such as Lenin, Stalin and others. The most horrible thing is that memorials and monuments were established a group, called 26 Baku commissars, who organized the genocide of Azerbaijani people in Baku in 1918 in order to please the Bolshevik propaganda. The memorial to 26 Baku commissars was a humiliation of the Azerbaijani people", said she.
The deputy noted that the fact that after the USSR collapse peoples, including Azerbaijanis, did not accept the memorials, symbolizing the ideology of colonizing nations, is natural.
"The memorials and monuments, based on historical truth should not cause one's resentment. The memorial on the place of mass burial of civilians, who was killed by Armenian armed forces in 1918, was not permitted in the Soviet time. PACE president Luis Maria de Puig has visited such a burial in Guba and said he was terrified with what he saw there", said Pashayeva.
