Benita Ferrero-Waldner: "It became clear that the legislation of Azerbaijan under which the foreign radio stations were closed down, passed expertise in the Council of Europe

I discussed issue of closure of foreign radio stations at the meeting with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, said Benita Ferrero-Waldner, EU commissioner on external ties and European Neighborhood Policy at a briefing following the meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov.

"During the meeting it became clear that the legislation of Azerbaijan which passed expertise in the Council of Europe contains paragraphs according to which the transmission of foreign radio stations on the national frequencies has been stopped. But the Minister said that Azerbaijan is ready for a dialogue and an appropriate variant can be worked out in the framework of the law", said she.

Notably, before the meeting with Mamedyarov, Waldner said while speaking to reporters that at the talks in Baku she will express her serious concerns over the closure of foreign radio stations.
