Azerbaijani FM receives EU commissioner on external ties

Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mamedyarov met Benita Ferrero-Waldner, EU commissioner on external ties and European neighborhood policy in Baku.
At a briefing following the meeting Mamedyarov said the EU commissioner discussed the recent situation in the negotiation process on the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict and the recent visit of the OSCE MG co-chairs to Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"We have exchanged views on the issues, in which EU can assist for resolution of this conflict. On the whole, we discussed the issue of the threat of conflicts to the stability and peace in the region", said he.

The Minister also noted that the meeting participants discussed the issues of energy security, gas projects, as well as projects in the framework of the Eastern Partnership program, suggested to Azerbaijan along with five countries - Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus.

In turn, speaking about the Eastern Partnership program, Waldner noted that it envisions signing of an associative contract as well as other bilateral agreements.

She said the associative contract will create conditions for wider cooperation in economic, political and other spheres. Waldner noted that a special contract will refer to the facilitation of the visa regime.

The EU commissioner, speaking about the paragraph on energy in the associative contract noted that it will help settle issues of both gas suppliers and the countries, used as a transit and consumers.

She said an important conference will be held to consider all issues of Nabucco project in Prague on May 7.
