Vagif Samedoghlu: "We will survive in the world economic crisis, but what about moral crisis?"

The undoubted achievements of Azerbaijan last year include the presidential elections, in which the overwhelming victory was gained by Ilham Aliyev, said Milli Medjlis deputy Vagif Samedov.

He voiced satisfaction that the results of elections and their democratic conduction were recognized in the whole world, including by such influential organizations as the Council of Europe, PACE and US Department of State.

"I would like to stress such great achievements of Azerbaijan, under the leadership of the president of our country Ilham Aliyev, in the diplomatic area. For example, a very important resolution about the situation in the occupied Azerbaijani lands was adopted in 2008 at the UN General Assembly. Moreover, not only last year but also within the past four years Azerbaijan has been the first country in the world in the sense of economic growth, which is rejoicing.

Another important event of the last year was the recognition of Azerbaijan as the first reformer country in the world by the World Bank", said he.

He also listed the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad, the wide construction of social establishments, creation of medical centers and building schools throughout the country.

As for the conduction of a referendum about amendments and alterations to the Constitution of Azerbaijan, including the one annulling limits on being elected as a president, he said he is concerned with the situation.

"Both in the presidential elections of 2003 and at the recent presidential elections last year, I represented the candidate for presidency Ilham Aliyev. But any developed and really democratic country must have an alternative to the working president of the country. Unfortunately, I do not see such an alternative among the working powers or the local opposition, which is a sad event.

Moreover, I think it would be senseless to discuss the conduction of a referendum on making amendments and alterations to the Azerbaijani constitution, in particular, those annulling limits on being elected as a president for more than twice, before 2012, that is the year before the next presidential elections in our country", said Samedoghlu.  

Speaking about the problem of the use of colloquial Azerbaijani on the local TV channels, he said this problem has not been settled yet, as, unfortunately, leaders of local TV channels do not orient on Azerbaijani intellectuals, preferring not to educate masses, but follow their wishes.

"Though there are people, who could be a best example of a real love to native language. Our prominent film director Oqtay Mirkasimov earlier spoke Azerbaijani very bad, but now he speaks perfect Azerbaijani! But there are many such examples", said he.

"I remember how we tried to settle this problem, inviting famous men of letters, composers, art figures.Representatives of three local TV channels attended the event. But unfortunately, the material on discussions was not demonstrated on any of these channels.

Later we were told openly: "Owing to these incoherently speaking showmen, we, the local channels, attract attention of the majority of our citizens", noted Samedoghlu and added that this is a sad tendency.

"We will survive in the world economic crisis, but what about moral crisis?", asked he.

"I am sure that only the personal interference of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who speaks not only foreign languages, but also perfect Azerbaijani language and is himself the wonderful example of Azerbaijani intellectuals, will save us from the rapid termination of intelligent Azerbaijani language", concluded the deputy.
