Liberal-Democratic Party of Azerbaijan faces obstacles while executing idea on restoration of proportional system

24 November 2008 [15:57] - TODAY.AZ
The Liberal-Democratic Party of Azerbaijan has faced obstacles in collecting signatures, necessary for holding a referendum on restoration of the proportional system, said deputy chairman of the party Vahid Nazarov.
He said the obstacles mainly lie in the pressure on the party activists.

"The 29th district electoral commission has created obstacles to the initiative group, comprising 55 people, in signature collection. The party activists are threatened that this is against the statehood. Moreover, one of them has already been dismissed.

Nevertheless, we do not intend to stop, as this is our constitutional right.

Through two days we have collected over 500 signatures. This process continues in the regions of the country. We intend to implement our project till the end", noted he.

The party is speaking with an initiative to apply a proportional system in the electoral process. Elections in Azerbaijan are held on the majority system.

Before 2002 Azerbaijan applied a mixed electoral system. The referendum, held in 2002, ratified constitutional reforms and the proportional system was fully canceled.
