Norwegian ambassador invited to Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry

19 November 2008 [10:17] - TODAY.AZ
Norway`s ambassador in Baku, Jon Ramberg, has been summoned to the foreign ministry to receive a formal protest over the Norwegian foreign ministry`s November 12 statement on the activities of foreign radio stations in Azerbaijan.
The ambassador was told the report does not reflect the reality, and that the issue will be solved only in accordance with Azerbaijan`s legislation, reports AzerTac.

Ramberg was also told his country must be more accurate while giving statements concerning foreign stations since this can damage bilateral relations.

Notably, on November 12, the Foreign Ministry of Norway announced that it supports the statements, voicing concerns over the plans to close foreign radio stations.

The statement read that such a decision is not useful for the development of pluralistic press in Azerbaijan.

"In the relations with Azerbaijan Norway attaches special importance to the issues of democratic development, jural state and human rights. The opportunity to use foreign news sources is an integral part of these issues.

Therefore, we regret about the plans of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council to halt broadcasting of foreign radio stations in the country and will discuss this issue with the Azerbaijani government", says the statement.
