04 September 2008 [16:27] - TODAY.AZ
The vice president's visit, which was planned for some time, was the logical next step in our efforts over the past several years to strengthen our partnership across the board, with strong dialogues on economics, energy, security and democracy, said US ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse, commenting on results of Richard Cheney's visit to our country.

She said that this dialogue has been not only government to governmenmt, but people to people, including increased educational and cultural exchanges.

"Vice president Cheney is the highest ranking US official to ever visit Azerbaijan. His visit to Baku signals a new phase in our bilateral relationship. Though distance may lie between our nations, our peoples are close. And becoming closer each day", said she.

Quoting the vice president, Derse noted that America strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. She noted that we are committed to achieving a negotiated solution to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict- a solution that starts with the principle of territorial integrity and takes into account other interational principles.

"Achieving a solution is more important now than ever before: that outcome will enhance peace and stability in the region and Azerbaijan's security, as well", concluded Derse.
