U.S. senator, author of bill on waiving Freedom Support Act's Section 907, to visit Azerbaijan

Member of the U.S. Senate Sam Brownback will visit Baku on February 20.

Spokesman for Foreign Ministry Khazar Ibrahim told APA that the senator will have various meetings in Baku.

He is scheduled to have meetings with officials of the Foreign Ministry and at Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Academy.

Sam Brownback is an author of the Silk Road Strategy Act envisaging assistance to the restoration of Historical Silk Road passing through Azerbaijan (1999).

The bill allowing U.S. president to waive Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act was also prepared by Sam Brownback after the events of September 11, 2001.

The proposal prepared in September, 2001 was submitted to the Senate in October. President Bush adopted the law on waiving Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act in January, 2002.

The law has been effective within the past five years.

Besides, Sam Brownback is lobbying for Azerbaijan.

On December 15, 2003 the senator came to Azerbaijan along with the U.S. delegation to attend Heydar Aliyev's funeral.
