Hikmet Gadji-zade: "If Kosovo independence is recognized unilaterally, Garabagh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia will address to this precedent"

28 January 2008 [11:18] - TODAY.AZ
If Kosovo independence is recognized unilaterally, Garabagh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia will address to this precedent.

The due statement was made by famous political scientist Hikmet Gadji-zade, commenting on the influence of the Kosovo conflict on Nagorno Garabagh in his interview to Day.Az.

He said Nagorno Garabagh and Kosovo conflicts do not have much in common, but both Armenia and Russia will say that they are quite the same.

"The strongest, but not those, who adhere to the international law, will be right. In other words, it is too dangerous for us".

He also commented on the statement made by Armenian Foreign Minister Varsan Oskanyan, which says that Armenia was the one who prevented ethnic cleansing against the people of Garabagh:

"This is a next lie: we have not occupied Armenian lands, it were them who occupied ours and held ethnic cleansing there. But here we can see that Oskanyan tries to use the Kosovo precedent. This means that they have got themselves prepared for such events".

He agreed that the attempt to draw parallels between the Kosovo and Nagorno Garabagh conflicts will be the initiative of Russia, rather than Armenia, in a strive to have mechanisms of pressure both on Azerbaijan and Armenia.

He said Russia declared in open that it will not recognize independence of Kosovo and in case it occurs, the international law would be ineffective.

Thus, according to him, Russia tries to become more independent in most hot spots  of the former USSR, including the Garabagh conflict

He said, however, that if this field of international law is violated, it would be dangerous for Russia, as well, as the subjects of the Russian Federation may also start processes on separation.

"I would like to repeat that this is too dangerous for Azerbaijan and for the region, on the whole", he concluded.
