Elin Suleymanov: "The election of a candidate who will be fully aware of the strategic interests of the United States in our region would be favorable for Azerbaijan"

"Azerbaijanis of the United States are more active in the political processes of the country than ever. Azerbaijani organizations, such as the Azerbaijan community of America, US-Azerbaijani Council, Azerbaijani communities of New-York, Washington, Houston, San-Fransisco and others play a special role in this process. The recent creation of US Azeris Netrowk has become one of the most encouraging initiatives", general consul of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles Elin Suleymanov said.

Commenting on the pre-election situation in the United States, he said that the inner-Party election campaign both among democrats and republicans is in the center of attention of the US Community.

"Naturally, the competition between the candidates becomes tenser in some moments. Thus, republicans McCain and Romni, as well as democrats Clinton, Obama and Edwards regularly exchange mutual accusations", he said.  

He noted that even the leading US mass media highlight the most potential negative and scandal evolution of events with great pleasure, frequently lifting the words of the candidates out of context.

"Of course, the elections to the Congress in 2006 showed that Republicans have significantly lost their influence. However, we should be careful with conclusions. For example, the rating of the Congress, where democrats account for the majority, is too low".

As an answer to the question whether it is possible to define the most popular candidates for president, he said most things will become clear on February 5 in the so called Super Tuesday, when the inner-Party elections will simultaneously be held in several states.

"The election of a candidate who will be fully aware of the strategic interests of the United States in our region would be favorable for Azerbaijan. This means the candidate, who will come out from the long-term interests of the United States and will not follow the pressure of various groups with limited political goals, such as the Armenian lobby. Any pragmatic politician will be aware of the importance of strengthening US-Azerbaijani partnership. Azerbaijan's importance is unquestioned in the result of a purposeful policy, carried out by the leadership of the country. I am sure that the next US President will realize it", he said.
