Azerbaijan to consider issue on election of Baku mayor

The status of capital cities were discussed in the meeting of Chamber of Local Authorities within the 14th plenary session of Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.

A rapporteur on the issue, Head of the Armenian delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe, Emin Yeritsyan said Baku is the only city among the member states which does not have common Municipality, APA reports.

Commenting on the report of rapporteur from Armenia Gadir Khaliov, secretary of Azerbaijani Delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities exclusively told he supported election of mayors of capitals in member states of the Council of Europe.

Gadir Khalilov said the Council of Europe gave recommendations to Baku on this issue which is to be considered by Azerbaijan government soon. He also said the municipalities were distributed on regions like in many states.

"We stay on Tbilisi option. Elected municipalities form Board and choose its president. The elected president becomes mayor of Tbilisi."

Gadir Khalilov said law on capital is necessary on this purpose.

It is recommended to grant capital cities with special status at the end of the debates. It said capital administration should take part in the drafting document on such status.
