Leo Platvoet to visit Azerbaijan, Armenia and the conflict zone along with Lord Russell-Johnston

19 April 2007 [22:05] - TODAY.AZ
"The report drawn up by PACE co-rapporteurs Andres Herkel and Tony Lloyd on honoring of obligations and commitments by Azerbaijan is a very good document.

"There is a need for carrying out speedy reforms, making amendments to the Electoral Code before the forthcoming parliamentary elections in the country. There should be strong opposition along with the strong authority, and pressures against media should be ended," Leo Platvoet, PACE rapporteur on missing persons in the South Caucasus told the APA's correspondent.

The rapporteur said that he has suspended preparation of the report on missing persons.

"It is connected with the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia. The meeting of the committee to be held on May 25 in Belgrade will determine whether the report will be debated in PACE summer session. If the report is adopted, it will be put to debate in the June session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe," he said.

Leo Platvoet also said he will visit the region in June in the composition of the PACE Nagorno Karabakh subcommittee.

"I will possibly visit Azerbaijan, Armenia and the conflict zone along with Lord Russell-Johnston. I can not publicize the composition of the mission that will visit the region," he said. APA
