US concerned about the situation of freedom of press in Azerbaijan

Internews-Azerbaijan Public Union provided training for journalists, operators, editors working in the regions through financial support of the US Embassy in Azerbaijan.

The final program of the training was held today. Internews-Azerbaijan director Ilham Safarov stated in the event attended by US ambassador Anne Derse participants from Ganja, Guba, Mingechevir and Lankaran have prepared materials on journalist research in the framework of the program.

The training was conducted by Moscow Television Academy's representative Rauf Mammadov, famous TV expert Zeynal Mammadli and cinematographer Ayaz Salayev.

Ambassador Derse stressed the importance of such events and said Washington is always ready to render assistance to development of democracy in Azerbaijan.

"Citizens can not get independent information on their government and its policy without free press," she said.

The diplomat stated that the US is concerned about the situation on freedom of press in Azerbaijan. She noted that Elmar Huseynov's assassination, which has not been disclosed, acts against journalists, which are remaining unpunished, delay of issuing license to ANS TV Company are regarded as restrictions against press.

Stressing the necessity of journalists' observing the ethical, unbiased standards while writing, Ms. Derse regards that irresponsible journalism cannot be a pretext to restrict this fundamental right.

15 participants of the training were presented with certificates in end of the event, APA reports.
