Speaker meets Chairman of PACE Subcommittee

Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament Ogtay Asadov on 29 November met Chairman of the PACE Interim Subcommittee on Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh problem Russell Johnston.

Speaker of Milli Majlis said Azerbaijan has been admitted as a full member of the European Council in 2001. The country's delegation to PACE then was led by incumbent President Ilham Aliyev, who made tremendous efforts to strengthen image of the Republic on the international arena, the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict, and the fair solution of the problem.

Azerbaijan Parliament and PACE have established relations based on mutual trust and the country strongly hopes and relies upon this Organization in resolution to this painful problem. The Speaker noted that Mr. Russell Johnston had made several visit to the country and his visit to the country in 2005 on the eve of parliament elections promoted fair and objective opinion in world community.

"Azerbaijan is a democratic country and it highly assesses the European values," the Chairman of the PACE Interim Subcommittee on Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh problem Russell Johnston stressed. The guest also reminded his visit with the nationwide leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, saying he was deeply impressed with talks to this politician. "The reliable relations between PACE and the country, bringing of the country's legislature to conformity with world standards, development of democracy and improvement of election process accelerates integration of Azerbaijan to Europe," Mr. Russell Johnston emphasized.
