Azeri Foreign Minister visits Cuba for the first time

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and his Cuban counterpart Felipe Perez Roque are due to sign Friday in Cuban capital of Havana an inter-ministerial accord for the exemption of visas.

Mammadyarov, who arrived Thursday in Havana for the first time since Azerbaijan restored independece in 1991, said they will also sign on the creation of a joint commission for bilateral cooperation.

Azeri foreign minister is expected to meet today with Juan Almeida, vice president of Cuba's Council of State, and Basic Industry Minister Yadira Garcia.

The Azeri official told Prensa Latina that his stay in Havana will allow him to develop bilateral ties and fulfil his government s special interest.

"Friendship between both peoples," said Mammadyarov, "goes back a long way, but could be revitalized with exchange in areas like the production of energy, among others."

Cuban Minister for Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration Marta Lomas was grateful for his visit, and advocated for revitalizing old ties between both countries under new conditions.
