YAP to nominate Ilham Aliyev's candidacy in 2008 elections

27 September 2006 [13:45] - TODAY.AZ
The ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party (YAP) started preparations for the 2008 presidential elections.

YAP deputy executive secretary Mubariz Gurbanli told the APA the party will start implementation of relevant measures during election campaign early next year. Gurbanli noted that YAP will nominate head of state Ilham Aliyev's candidacy in upcoming presidential elections.

"No one casts doubt on Ilham Aliyev's winning these elections. Neither local nor foreign observers doubt of that. This is axiom. However, YAP is in earnest about the presidential elections and focuses on election campaign," the deputy said.

Gurbanli also added that the ruling party will make some changes to its election tactics and use new election technologies.

As coming to the question whether YAP sees any alternative to its candidate, Gurbanli said the party's position regarding this is unambiguous.

"We live in a democratic society. Everyone has right to join elections. YAP supports dealing with all issues on the presidential elections in legal framework. Every candidate will be rival to YAP's candidate," he said.
