Azeri FM meets UNWTO Secretary General

12 September 2006 [20:03] - TODAY.AZ
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met September 11 with Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Francesco Frangialli.

Mr. Mammadyarov described tourism industry as one of the main factors that accelerate the development of Azerbaijan's non-oil sector as well as strengthen the country's international position.

The Azeri Minister said the fact that Armenia occupied twenty percent of Azerbaijan's territory remains to be the major barrier to further development of the country's tourism sector.

Elmar Mammadyarov highly appreciated the level of cooperation of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism with UNWTO.

He added that appointment of the country's Ambassador to Spain as a permanent representative in UNWTO will give the impetus to further strengthening the bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Organization.

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister said he offered to hold the 48th meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Europe in Baku.

Francesco Frangialli, for his part, noted there are huge opportunities to enhance tourism in Azerbaijan, adding he believes this sector will further develop.

Mr. Frangialli said such events as the fifth session of the Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers will contribute to enhancement of tourism industry.
