Elmar Mammadyarov met with Ban Ki-moon

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ban Ki-moon, who is accompanying President Roh Moo-hyun on his visit to Azerbaijan from May 10 to 12, 2006, held the ROK-Azerbaijan Foreign Ministers' Talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmar Mammadyarov on May 10, to fine-tune their positions ahead of the bilateral summit meeting scheduled for the following day and exchange views on various issues of mutual concern such as bilateral relations and UN reforms.

According to the spokesman of South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs an Trade, two ministers shared the view that President Roh Moo-hyun's visit to Azerbaijan, which is the first state visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in March 1992, will serve as an important and historic opportunity to uplift bilateral ties onto a new level of cooperation.

In particular, the two ministers highly commended that the two countries are setting up a new direction for the development of bilateral relations in various fields such as politics, economy and culture with the conclusion of various agreements and MOUs, and agreed to make mutual efforts to further enhance friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries through concrete implementation of substantial cooperation projects in such fields as energy, construction, transportation and IT, based on the interest and support of the two heads of states in the development of bilateral relations.

The two ministers also noted that the ROK and Azerbaijan were elected as first members of the UN Human Rights Council through mutual support, and agreed to further enhance bilateral cooperation in the international arena including the UN.
