No plans to send more peacekeepers to Iraq

16 February 2006 [17:59] - TODAY.AZ
The Iraqi ambassador to Azerbaijan Arshad Ismayil Omar has proposed to expand the contingent of Azerbaijani peacekeepers in his country.

But Azeri officials said they have not received any appeals to that end. A spokesman for the Defense Ministry Ilgar Verdiyev told AssA-Irada that such an appeal should be submitted to the Azeri government first, while the Defense Ministry is to executive the measure, if it is deemed appropriate. "I am not aware of such an appeal at this point," Verdiyev said.

The Defense Ministry representative said the government is regularly in touch with the 150 Azeri peacekeeping forces guarding a hydro-power station at the Al-Anvar province of Iraq. The officers are enjoying good conditions while on duty, he said.
