Seminar dedicated to press, broadcasting issues complete

A 3-day workshop dedicated to public television, press and broadcasting concluded its work on Friday.
Organized by the Council of Europe and the Azerbaijani President's Apparat the event discussed public broadcasting, its models, foreign experience and state of local television channels, Trend reports.

Carline Morrison, a Council of Europe representative, noted that the public television should become independent institute meeting the public interests, avoiding making the channel representing the interests of narrow groups. He stressed the necessity of indicating in the Azerbaijani legislation the rules linked with the granting frequencies and their licensing. The CE is sure it could promote the improvement of legal base. There is a media market in the country, while the government should allow the transfer of private television channels into a monopolized facility of representing the interests of narrow groups of people," she underscored.

Etibar Babayev, the President of Space private television, told the seminar about the problems in the private broadcasting in the country - weak advertisement market and restricted financial opportunities. The products of local channels do not have exit to world markets, while the tariffs of advertisements within in the country are low, as big discounts are made for entrepreneurs. He also noted the low professionalism of the employees at private televisions, in particular the errors in speeches.

In his Nushiravan Marharramli, the chairman of the National TV and Radio Broadcasting Council, informed on the establishment of the a commission for defining the length of air time on concrete themes of tele-programs.

The forum ended in adoption of a final document.
