POSSIBLE BREAKTHROUGH: Back to the Future hoverboard moves closer to reality - VIDEO

20 October 2011 [13:23] - TODAY.AZ
Tel Aviv University has moved one step closer to creating a real-life version of Back To The Future 2's hoverboard using superconductivity and the Meissner effect.

The Superconductivity Group from the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University in Israel have demonstrated quantum superconductors locked in a magnetic field in a recent video - which basically means hoverboards could well be on the way at some stage in the not-so-distant future.

Uploaded by YouTube user ASTCvideos on Sunday, the video has already been viewed almost 150,000 times and taken Twitter by storm.

On person tweeted: 'Quantum levitation is either the future of science or proof that magic is real, I'm not sure yet.'

And Back To the Future fans can barely hold their excitement. One wrote: 'Back to the Future Hover Boards take a step closer.... Quantum Levitation.'

Another added: 'Thanks to Quantum Levitation all we have to do now is cover all the sidewalks with metal and we can finally live our hoverboard dreams!'

However, the demonstrator in the video describes a process called 'quantum trapping' and insists that the object is not floating but 'locked above the surface' using a 'supercooled' magnet.
