'World's highest' Jesus statue completed

A statue of Jesus said to be the highest in the world has been completed in Poland. The white figure itself is 33 metres tall - one for every year of Christ's life - Sky News reports. With its placing mound and crown included it rises 51 metres over the western Polish plains in Swiebodzin.

Swiebodzin town mayor Dariusz Bekisz claimed that the complete statue exceeds Rio's 39.6m 'Christ the Redeemer' and the 40.4m 'Cristo de la Concordia' in Bolivia. Local priest Reverend Sylwester Zawadzki said of the end of the five-year effort: "I have never been as happy as I am today.

"This is the culmination of my life's work as a priest. I felt inspired to fulfil Jesus's will, and today I give thanks to him for allowing me to fulfil his will."

However, Jarek, 41, from a nearby village said of the reported ˆ1 million (£870,000) project: "I don't understand. With all this money, we would have done better to build an elementary school."
