The carpet woven by Persian masters in the 17 century became the most expensive carpet in the world.
It was sold at auction for 6.2 million pounds sterling (9.6 million dollars).
Unique carpet was bought by an anonymous buyer via telephone under deafening applause in the hall of bidders. The proposed amount was almost 20 times higher than the starting evaluation of the product.
"This carpet has great appeal. Its ingenuity and proportionality are combined with design of deceptive simplicity,” head of Christie's carpet auction house William Robinson said.
The previous record price belonged also to one of the 17th century Persian carpet. In summer 2008, a silk rug from Isfahan was bought in New York for 3.5 million dollars.
